Now all tourists in the world have one more reason to visit Florence. It’s just completed the restoration of the Baptistery of San Giovanni, after more than 70 years since the last and after an intense work lasted a year and nine months. The restoration, that Pope Francis in his last visit to Florence saw with amazement and wonder, involved the marble covering the eight exterior facades, Lantern of the Baptistery and ground cover.
The restoration was necessary to eliminate the layers of deposits and deposits of dust pollution and to redefine the elements in marble ruined by the time.
Expertly directed by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore in collaboration with the Sovrintendenza Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Florence, Pistoia and Prato, the restoration involved a cost of 2 million euro, which were funded by the same Opera and by a valuable campaign crowfunding attended with enthusiasm thousands of citizens.
The restorers of the Consorzio San Zanobi, which includes a group of Florentine companies, realized the whole job. In support of it were carried out laser surveys, studies and iconographic and historical diagnostic campaigns carried out by the University of Florence and Icvbc-CNR.
We have to mention also the restoration of the lantern, which required great effort and predicted interventions of consolidation works of the structure
and the removal of the alteration of the gilding of the ball and the cross.
The visit of Pope Francis, at the Fifth National Congress of the Italian Church, was a kind of icing on a cake complete success, which attracted as always thousands and thousands of faithful, which – we are sure – will be followed by many tourists, intrigued by the new pearl of Florence.
